Chapter 8: Creating and Editing Sounds
Page 152
Sound Compression
Sounds may be compressed to ½ their original size to save sound
memory space. This gives an MPC60 with memory expansion (26.2
seconds) an equivalent maximum sound memory of 52.4 seconds!
Compression does, however, add distortion and reduce clarity in the
treble frequencies, and can add much distortion to sounds containing a
large amount of high frequencies such as crash cymbals.
To compress a sound, press SOUNDS, then 9, then 3, and the following
screen will appear:
============ Compress Sound ===========A
Sound:Long_sound Tune: 0
Right:Snare_drum_R
Press <Do it> to compress to 1/2 size.
Tune must be 0 or more.
========================================
<Do it> <Ply/Stp>
In the SOUND field, select the sound to be compressed, then press <Do
it>. The selected sound’s tuning is displayed in the TUNE field. (This is
the same parameter as in the EDIT SOUND screen.) During the
compression process, 120 is subtracted from the tuning in order to
compensate for the faster play of the smaller sound. Since -120 is the
lowest possible tuning, compression is only permitted on sounds with a
tuning of 0 or greater. If your sound’s tuning is below 0, you must retune
it to 0 before compressing.
After compression, save the sound to disk. It’s a good idea to save it to a
different file than the original uncompressed sound. That way, you have
the option of loading either the normal or compressed version of the
sound as needed.
