Chapter 10: Syncing to Tape and Other Devices
Page 200
MIDI Time Code is SMPTE timecode encoded over MIDI. Since it is a
MIDI signal, it cannot be recorded on tape. Rather, it is used to sync to
devices such as drum machines and sequencers. The MPC60 does not
generate MIDI Time Code, but does sync to it when received from an
external source.
To play back a sequence or song in sync to MIDI Time Code:
Use the same instructions as if playing a sequence or a song in sync to
SMPTE (earlier in this chapter), except that in the Sync screen select
MIDI TIME CODE in the Mode field and set the MIDI in field to the
number of the MIDI input where the MIDI time code signal is connected.
Syncing to FSK24
Of the five possible sync modes in the MPC60, only three can be used to
sync to tape: FSK24, 1/4 NOTE CLICKS, and SMPTE. SMPTE is
preferable for many reasons, and is the standard for professional use.
1/4 NOTE CLICKS can be used with tape, but since it provides low
timing resolution it is not a good first choice for syncing to tape. FSK24
was the tape sync method in general use for musical applications prior to
the acceptance of SMPTE, and is still used by many drum machines and
sequencers. If you don’t have the SMPTE option, FSK24 provides a very
good alternative.
FSK24 sync code is generated in real time as the MPC60 plays.
Remember that FSK24 sync code contains tempo information, so it is
important that the tempo is properly set before the FSK sync tone is
recorded to tape.
To record the sync tone to tape:
1. Connect the SYNC OUT jack of the MPC60 to the input of a track on
your multitrack tape recorder.
2. Set the recording level of the sync tone’s track to -3 dB. (The FSK24
sync tone is always emitted from the SYNC OUT jack, even when the
MPC60 is stopped.)
3. Create your sequence or song on the MPC60, making sure that all
tempo settings and tempo changes have been finalized. It is
important that the tempo be exactly as you want it throughout the
sequence or song because the FSK24 sync tone contains all tempo
information and cannot be changed after recording.
4. Put the tape recorder into record mode and start recording.
5. Play the sequence or song on the MPC60. Let it play until the its end,
then stop both the MPC60 and the tape recorder.
