Chapter 9: Saving and Loading From Disk
Page 184
Using the Marion Systems MPC-SCSI Interface for
External Hard Disk Storage
The MPC60 can be fitted with an optional SCSI port, permitting an
external SCSI drive (such as the Iomega Zip drive) to be used for all disk
save and load operations. This option, manufactured by Marion Systems
and sold by Roger Linn Design, provides a 25-pin D-type SCSI
connector which is compatible with hard drives used with the Apple
Macintosh. All that is required for interfacing with hard drives that use 50-
pin connectors is the appropriate SCSI adapter cable. The MPC-SCSI
should work with any SCSI drive, but it is certified to work only with
removable drives from Iomega (Zip and Jazz) and SyQuest. The vast
majority of MPC-SCSI owners use Iomega Zip drives. One Zip disk holds
the equivalent of 125 MPC60 floppies and runs approximately 4 times as
fast.
Before you can use a SCSI hard disk, it must be formatted. (See the
following section to learn about formatting.) To use the formatted drive,
simply make sure the hard disk is connected and turned on whenever
you turn the MPC60’s power on. When the MPC60’s power is turned on,
it scans the SCSI port and if it finds a hard disk, it makes it “active”— it
internally recognizes it as ready for use.
It is possible to make a SCSI hard disk active without recycling power, or
to change the active device when two or more SCSI devices are
connected. See the section “Making a SCSI hard disk active” to learn
more about this.
Terminating your SCSI disk
In order for your SCSI disk to operate correctly, it must be terminated.
This is an electronic term used with SCSI devices. By definition,
termination means that when 1 or more SCSI devices are connected
together, the devices at the ends must have a special electronic state
called termination. The MPC60 is already terminated internally, so you
only need to be concerned with terminating the SCSI device at the other
end of the SCSI cable.
If you have a single Zip drive connected the SCSI port, termination is
easy: Simply set the TERM switch on the back of the Zip drive to ON. If
you have another SCSI drive connected to the MPC60 and nothing else,
read the drive’s instructions to learn how to terminate it.
If you have more than one SCSI drive connected to the MPC60, only
terminate the last drive in the SCSI chain.
