Chapter 9: Saving and Loading From Disk
Page 154
Overview
The MPC60 has a built-in 3.5-inch double sided, double density disk
drive for storing data. An optional interface, sold by Roger Linn Design,
lets you connect SCSI drives such the Iomega Zip drive for vastly
increased storage and save/load speed. (See the appendix for ordering
information.) This chapter describes the procedures for saving and
loading the various types of files. Since the MPC60 loses all sequence
and sound data when the power is removed, it is important always to
save any changes to disk before turning the power off.
COMMENT: Although the MPC-SCSI hard disk interface is an
optional accessory, this chapter describes disk operations for
both floppy and hard disk storage. If you don’t have the MPC-
SCSI interface and a hard disk installed, your data screens will
appear slightly different than shown in the following descriptions.
The specific differences are detailed where they occur.
Each 2DD floppy disk can store up to 793KB of data but not more than
112 separate files.
The six different file types:
All data are stored to disk as files. All disk files used on the MPC60 use
a 16-character file name, which you assign to the file when it is saved to
disk. In addition, there is a three-letter file extension, which is used to
differentiate the file types. The six types of files (and file name
extensions) are:
1. FILENAME.SEQ: This file contains a single sequence.
2. FILENAME.ALL: This file contains all 99 sequences and all 20
songs.
3. FILENAME.SND: This file contains a single drum sound.
4. FILENAME.PGM: This file holds the contents of a single program
and the names of all sounds used by that program, but it does not
contain the actual sounds.
5. FILENAME.APS: This file holds the contents of all eight programs
and the names of all sounds used in those programs, but it does not
contain the actual sounds.
6. FILENAME.PAR: This file contains all settings that are normally
retained in the MPC60, even when power is removed. These
parameters are not saved within any other file type.
Before proceeding, be aware of these important points:
• When new disks are purchased, they are not formatted. Before using
the disks, you MUST format each one using option 8 from the DISK
menu (Copy,format,other). Disks pre-formatted to MS-DOS 720K format
