Chapter 8: Creating and Editing Sounds
Page 137
MPC60 will prompt you afterwards to insert the disk containing
the associated part 2 file. The part 2 file cannot be loaded by
itself. Also, to load one of these two-part “split” MPC60 sound
files into an MPC3000, the MPC3000 must be running software
version 3.12 or higher, available from Roger Linn Design.
• The Pre-Record field:
The MPC60 can record a small amount of time before the level threshold
is exceeded, insuring that even the low level start of the sound is
retained. This field is used to set that amount of pre-record time, in
milliseconds. For example, to record 10 milliseconds before the audio
threshold is exceeded, enter 10 here. The default value here is 1
millisecond, which is adequate for most sharp attack sounds like drums.
COMMENT: When played back, the sound starts playing from
the point at which the threshold was exceeded because the Soft
Start parameter (in the Edit a Sound screen) is automatically set
to the first sample which exceeded the threshold. To hear the
pre-record portion of the sound, you must set the Soft Start field
to an earlier position within the sound.
• The Monitor field:
This choice field has two options: ON and OFF. If ON, the signal from the
sampling input is heard in the stereo mix outputs. If OFF, it is not. If you
are sampling with a microphone in the same room as the speakers,
select OFF to avoid audio feedback. Otherwise, select ON to hear the
incoming signal in the stereo mix.
• The Threshold%(T) field:
This sets the threshold above which recording will begin once <Rec
ready> has been pressed. The range is 0–100% of full scale. A good
setting to start with is 1%. Setting Threshold%(T) to 0 will cause
recording to begin as soon as <Rec ready> is pressed.
• The Record Level field:
This controls a 99 level digital volume control for the sampling input.
There is also a three-position switch on the back panel to select from
three volume ranges.
• The Meter section of the screen:
This is a simulation of an analog record level meter. While this screen is
present, the meter will constantly display the level of the signal at the
input. The threshold setting is graphically represented by a T within the
meter’s range. If the range is exceeded, ! is displayed to the right of the
meter’s range to indicate clipping.
• The <Rec ready> soft key:
Pressing this soft key commands the MPC60 to enter Record Ready
mode and the bottom line of the screen changes to:
Rec lite=ON when sound rec'd... <Cancel>
During this time the MPC60 stands ready to record, waiting for the
incoming audio to exceed the record threshold. Howver, the level meter
does not operate during this time, but rather only before <Rec ready> is
