Chapter 10: Syncing to Tape and Other Devices
Syncing to 1/4-note Clicks
This method of syncing uses any cleanly recorded, percussive sound
playing on 1/4-notes as a sync source. This allows you to add
sequenced parts to a recording that contains no sync track. For
example, the sync track could consist of a drummer recording a
track of 1/4-note drumstick clicks throughout the song. Using this
method of sync, the playback tempo is derived from the external
1/4-note clicks.
To play the MPC3000 in sync to 1/4-note clicks:
1. Connect the output of the tape track that contains the 1/4-note
click signal (or other percussive audio source) into the MPC3000’s
SYNC IN jack, and set the SYNC IN LEVEL to about 1/2.
3. In the Sync screen, set the Mode field (Sync input section) to 1/4
NOTE CLICKS
.
4. Set up the MPC3000 to play your sequence or song. Set the
playback tempo as close as possible to the intended tempo. The
internal tempo will be used for the time between the first and
second clicks received.
5. Rewind the tape to just before the point at which the 1/4-note
clicks begin.
6. Play the tape. Once the tape reaches the first click, the MPC3000
will begin playing. It will start at the current internal tempo,
then it will gradually use the timing of the clicks for its tempo. To
use 1/4 NOTE CLICK sync, you must always start the tape from
the beginning of the clicks, as in this example.
COMMENT: To smooth out any variations in tempo, the
playback tempo is averaged over time. It is possible for the
MPC3000 to follow slight tempo changes, but larger changes
will cause it to temporarily lag behind or lead. It is possible
to use almost any clean signal rather than metronome clicks,
but the signal used must be very distinct and short, such as a
cowbell or closed hi-hat, and there must be a minimum of
background noise. Adjusting the sync input level control will
help to minimize triggering from background noise.
