Chapter 10: Syncing to Tape and Other Devices
acceptance of SMPTE, and is still used by many drum machines and
sequencers. If you don’t have the SMPTE option, FSK24 provides a
very good alternative.
FSK24 sync code is generated in real time as the MPC3000 plays.
Remember that FSK24 sync code contains tempo information, so it
is important that the tempo is properly set before the FSK sync tone
is recorded to tape.
To record the sync tone to tape:
1. Connect the SYNC OUT jack of the MPC3000 to the input of a
track on your multitrack tape recorder.
2. Set the recording level of the sync tone’s track to -3 dB. (The
FSK24 sync tone is always emitted from the SYNC OUT jack,
even when the MPC3000 is stopped.)
3. Create your sequence or song on the MPC3000, making sure that
all tempo settings and tempo changes have been finalized. It is
important that the tempo be exactly as you want it throughout
the sequence or song because the FSK24 sync tone contains all
tempo information and cannot be changed after recording.
4. Put the tape recorder into record mode and start recording.
5. Play the sequence or song on the MPC3000. Let it play until the
its end, then stop both the MPC3000 and the tape recorder.
To play back the MPC3000 in sync to the tape:
1. Connect the output of the tape track that contains the FSK24
signal to the SYNC IN jack of the MPC3000.
2. Set the SYNC IN LEVEL control on the rear panel to about 1/2.
3. In the Sync screen, set the Mode field (Sync Input section) to
FSK24 and press SOFT KEY 1 until it reads <SyncIn=ON>.
4. Set up the MPC3000 to play your sequence or song.
5. Rewind the tape to just before the point at which you started
recording the sync tone.
6. Play the tape. Once the tape reaches the point where the sync
tone starts, the MPC3000 will begin playing its parts in perfect
sync. Note that the current tempo setting is not used; tempo is
provided from the sync tone on tape. To use FSK24, you must
always start the tape from the beginning of the recording, as in
this example.
COMMENT: If the MPC3000 doesn’t respond to the sync
signal, try adjusting the SYNC IN LEVEL control on the
rear panel. Find the lowest setting at which the MPC3000
responds, then increase the level by about 1/4 turn.
