Chapter 8: Creating and Editing Sounds
If the sound is stereo, (ST) will appear to the right of the sound
name. Also, once a sound is selected, the Soft St, Soft end,
Vol%, and Tune fields will immediately be updated to show the
newly selected sound’s settings.
• The Soft St (soft start) field:
When a sound is played, play actually starts not at the absolute
beginning of the sound but rather at the position within the sound
specified in this field. It is actually three interrelated fields:
1. Seconds (0-999),
2. Milliseconds (0-999), and
3. Samples (0-43; at the 44.1kHz sample rate, there are
approximately 44 samples to a millisecond.)
Increasing this value above 000.000.00 will cause the sound to start
playback from a location later than the actual start, but will retain
the unused beginning portion of the sound. It is possible to delete
this unused portion by using the <Do> soft key, described below. To
find the best soft start address for the sound automatically, use the
<Best st> soft key, described below.
• The Soft end field:
When a sound is played, play actually stops not at the absolute end
of the sound but rather at the position within the sound specified in
this field. It is a seconds.milliseconds.samples-format field as used
in the Soft st field above. Decreasing this value below the
address in the Length field will cause the sample to stop playing
sooner than the actual end, but will not delete the unused end of the
sound from memory. However, the end can be deleted from memory
by using the <Do> soft key, described below.
• The Length field:
This field shows the total size of the sound, in
seconds.milliseconds.samples format. This field is for indication
only—it cannot be edited directly.
• The Vol% (volume percentage) field:
This is an initial volume control for the sound, and affects all
outputs. The range is 1 to 200% and is initially set to 100%. The
intended purpose of this parameter is to adjust the sound’s volume
to be roughly equal to the levels of other sounds.
• The Tune field:
This is an initial tuning setting for the sound. This tuning value
adds to the other tuning values found in the program and to each
note’s Note Variation tuning data. The range is from -120 to +120 in
increments of 0.1 semitone. The intended purpose of this parameter
is to adjust the sound’s tuning to be at the apparent center of its
range.
