Carolina Country Rutherford EMC JANUARY 2013 19
ENERGY EFFICIENCY TIP
Did you know a computer can draw as much electric-
ity as a new refrigerator? Turn it off when not in use
or switch on its energy-saving mode. Also, cell phone
and mp3 player chargers as well as plasma TVs and
entertainment centers pull power even when they’re
off. Unplug these and other appliances to save on
your electric bill. Find more ways to save at Togeth-
erWeSave.com.

Security Deposit Schedule Revised
Rutherford EMC’s board of directors has approved a change in the
cooperative’s security deposit schedule. Effective January 1, 2013,
REMC’s minimal and maximum security deposits of $100, $200 and
$375, respectively, will increase to $125, $225 and $400.
Security deposits will be returned to active members in the
form of a credit on the electric service account after 24 consecu-
tive months of good credit as set forth in the co-op’s “good credit”
guidelines. Call any REMC office for more information on security
deposits.
Notice:
Rutherford EMC does not use any third
party vendors to accept payments
for our members’ accounts. Any pay-
ment made to a third party vendor
is not processed by Rutherford EMC
until that payment is received in one
of our offices. Any delay in receiving
such payment could result in fees or
disconnection of electric service.
Make Energy Efficiency A New Year’s Resolution
As you begin to think about New Year’s resolutions, put energy efficiency on the
list. Not only will becoming energy efficient help conserve energy, it can also
help you save on your electric bill.
Changing your energy habits is well worth the effort, and investing wisely in
home improvements can provide long-term savings. Here are just a few ideas:
Insulate your electric water heater. Blankets that will snugly wrap this appli-
ance are very inexpensive and will pay for themselves many times over.
Use window treatments effectively. Curtains, shades and draperies aren’t
just for decoration; they can also help you save energy. Most conventional
draperies with a tight weave can reduce heat loss from a warm room up to
10 percent. In the winter, close draperies at night, and only open those that
receive direct sunlight during the day.
Look for the star! If you are purchasing new appliances for your home, make
it an Energy Star rated appliance, and you can save lots on your electric bill.
Use power strips. Many appliances and electronics are constantly using elec-
tricity even when they are turned off. Turn off all the lights in your house, and
you will be surprised how many devices continue to glow. Using power strips
and turning them off when not in use helps to save energy.
